Welcome to Wondall Heights State School.
Wondall Heights has a school community steeped in tradition and many of our parents enjoyed their primary school years here so much that they have returned to the area so their children can experience the Wondall way. Our school is set on extensive grounds including 3 sports ovals, tennis and basketball courts, netball courts, cricket practice nets and swimming pool. We have a purpose built early years play area featuring a large all-weather sandpit, 3 play structures and plenty of free space. Our middle years students love to explore their recently upgraded play space that has a range of challenging equipment for upper body strength and balance.
Computer access for staff and students is a high priority and all teaching staff have a laptop for in-class use and record keeping. Every class has a timetabled session in the Media Room and Information and Communication Technology is an integral component of assessment tasks across the key learning areas. We are active participants in a range of inter-school sports – rugby league, soccer, netball and volleyball. Community groups e.g. Wynnum Manly Leagues Club provide clinics for skill development. A number of our students go on to represent our school at District, Metropolitan and State competitions.
The Arts is another focus area that provides extension opportunities for students. Our enthusiastic music teacher provides highly engaging material ensuring student engagement in classroom music. Both our Junior and Senior choirs provide regular performances at assemblies, school concerts and on key occasions e.g. ANZAC Day ceremony and Grandparents Day. They also compete in local Eisteddfods. We also have a very active instrumental program from Years 4 -7 where students enjoy performing both at school and community venues. In the last year an after school dance program has been added to the Arts offerings at Wondall. Girls and boys rush to the Hall each week eager to learn the latest dance moves!
We have a comprehensive whole school curriculum program covering Prep to Year 7 that is directly linked to the National Essential Learnings and Standards identified by the Queensland Studies Authority. Curriculum delivery is supported by close tracking of individual student learning, a range of specialist and intervention programs and opportunities for extension activities for gifted students. The special education program at Wondall Heights is fondly referred to as WHISP – Wondall Heights Intensive Support Program. The school has an inclusive policy where students with disabilities are supported within their class group whenever possible. Our school staff are committed to high quality teaching and learning and value the strong home school partnerships that exist. The Parents and Citizens Association and the wider school community provide a very high level of human and financial support to the range of educational programs.
We openly welcome international students to our school community. Currently we have a number of Finnish families – staff and students have learnt common phrases in Finnish to make these students feel welcome during their time in Australia.
The School’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students includes a comprehensive range of positive behavioural support strategies and a clearly scaffolded range of consequences. We consistently teach the You Can Do It program across all year levels.
I look forward to a close partnership with you in the support and extension of your child on their learning journey.
